Reading We use the Macmillan/McGraw Hill reading program. This program is designed to expose children to literature-based stories while integrating phonics and grammar. There are leveled readers for small guided reading groups and workbooks to supplement the lessons. We use the Daily 5 reading strategies in the classroom. Students work daily on writing, working on words, listening to reading, reading to self and reading to someone, while I work in small groups at individual reading levels. Writing The students use the Palmer Method of writing. We try to encourage correct letter formation and neatness at all times. We write in our journals practicing sentence formation, editing and completing main ideas. Math The Everyday Math Series is utilized at Onahan School from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Everyday Math is a spiraling curriculum that introduces concepts and skills in a variety of contexts. After skills are introduced they are repeatedly built upon and revisited. Everyday Math emphasizes problem solving, reading, and real world application. Social Studies We learn about ourselves, our families, our communities, map skills, our country and our world. Science Our Science lessons encompass Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science and the human body. We will be learning the scientific method.
